Nine SUVs that make sense on Kenyan roads right now, ranked by what they actually cost to run rather than by badge appeal.

Buying an SUV in Kenya is rarely about off-road ability. Most buyers want ground clearance for speed bumps and unpaved estate roads, space for a family, and a service network that will not leave them stranded in Nanyuki on a Sunday.
What actually matters here
Parts availability beats specification. A Harrier with a common 2AR engine will cost you a fraction of what a rarer European SUV costs to keep on the road, even when the European car is cheaper to buy.
Ground clearance, not four-wheel drive. Unless you regularly leave tarmac, 4WD adds weight, complexity and fuel consumption you will not use. Front-wheel-drive crossovers handle Kenyan roads well.
Hybrid maths have changed. Fuel prices make hybrids genuinely cheaper to run over three years, and hybrid batteries in imported Toyotas are lasting far longer than the early scare stories suggested. Ask for a battery health printout.
The shortlist
- Toyota Harrier Hybrid — the default choice for good reason. Around 16 km/l in town, parts everywhere, holds value.
- Mazda CX-5 SkyActiv-D — the best drive of the group and excellent on long runs. Diesel service intervals need discipline.
- Subaru Forester — genuine all-wheel drive with a raised body. Watch for CVT fluid history.
- Toyota RAV4 — slightly less refined than the Harrier, slightly cheaper to keep.
- Nissan X-Trail — spacious and cheap to buy; CVT is the item to check.
- Toyota Land Cruiser Prado — the upcountry standard. Expensive to buy, cheap to keep running.
- Honda Vezel — compact, frugal, well equipped.
- Suzuki Jimny — the only one on this list that is a real off-roader, and it is tiny.
- Lexus RX 450h — a Harrier with better sound deadening and a bigger service bill.
Before you pay
Ask for the import documents, confirm the duty status, and have a mechanic you chose — not one the seller recommends — put the car on a lift.
